Design

At around the 40 dollar mark, you shouldn’t expect too much, but you will be pleasantly surprised.’ The Oontz Angle 3 Ultra is a compact, rugged portable speaker, similar in shape to its predecessor, the Oontz Angle 3. The unit weighs in at just 15 ounces. And each end is covered with a black rubber cap, with a black grill over the speaker compartment.

Main body

A plastic body encases the rest of the speaker and wraps around the bass radiator. Two rubber supports are on the bottom to stabilize the unit, stop vibrations and allow breathing room for the bass radiator.

Underneath the unit sits a small, easily accessible waterproof panel that conceals the input jack and the micro-USB input.

Controls

The controls are positioned on the right-side rubber cover. It’s not, in our opinion, the ideal position, as they are out of view when your focus is directed at the speakers themselves. However, the controls are large and straightforward, consisting of a power button, Bluetooth button, led light, play, skip, and volume.

Bluetooth

The Oontz Angle 3 Ultra is very easy to pair with any device. Simply turn the speaker on and tap the Bluetooth, the LED will flash to show that the device is in pairing mode. Go to the Bluetooth settings on your smartphone or other device. Oontz Angle 3 will show, tap it, and when the LED stops flashing, you are connected.

Distance

The device has an advanced antenna design, which gives you up to a one hundred foot range from your smartphone. This is a significant upgrade and far exceeds the older models.

Microphone

A small microphone is positioned on the top and is a useful added feature that allows you to answer your phone and talk hands free. The Oontz Angle 3 Ultra is also compatible with Amazon Alexa devices.

Sound

The Oontz Angle 3 sounds like a far more expensive device. The sound is very well balanced and clear with a lot of rich, full, warm bass. With 14 Watts of power (7 watts per channel), it will give you enough volume without any distortion.

Digital processor

The internal digital processor will eliminate some frequencies from bass-heavy songs to prevent any audible distortion. This is kind of expected and doesn’t actually interfere with your listening experience that much.

Waterproof

The Oontz Angle 3 Ultra 4th generation has been certified IPX7 waterproof, whereas the earlier models were only splashproof, as can be seen by the IPX6 rating of the Angle 3.

This means is that the 4th gen models can be submerged in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes, while the earlier models will only survive being in the shower with you or spilling some water on them.

Practical use

One really awesome feature is the ability to connect several units together. So, if you would like to create a designated L and R speaker system, using this feature and with another speaker, you can create a dual stereo device with ease. But why stop at two? If you want even more volume and an even wider sound spread, add even more.

If you are having a party and want everyone in sync with the same music, no problem. Just connect as many of these relatively inexpensive speakers together as you wish, and place them throughout your home or outside. No fuss, no worries, easy to set up, hassle free, and up to 20 hours of music on one charge.

Take it with you…

If you are traveling to some exotic destination with friends, get everyone to buy one, connect them together, and party on the beach. At this low, low price, why not. If you happen to lose one at this price, it’s not a big deal; just replace it.

The size and weight also makes it very convenient for travel, being only 6.4 x 2.8 x 2.75 inches and weighing only 15 ounces.

Battery life and charging

It features a quality Li-ion rechargeable battery, which will give you up to 20 hours of playback on one charge at 50% volume. As is the case with most speakers, you can expect considerably less at higher volume levels.

The recharge time is about seven hours, and it charges using a micro USB charging cable.

Cambridge Soundworks have delivered a wonderful, rugged speaker with fantastic quality sound. This is a very loud speaker with lots of possible uses and would be ideal for your travels or just as a party speaker for the home.

Our favorite feature is the ability to connect so many speakers together and have your music playing in a number of rooms throughout your home and garden.

Got a studio?

One bit of studio advice for all your recording buffs. Get yourself a small portable speaker for the studio to reference your mixes. The Oontz Angle 3 Ultra would actually be a perfect little speaker for this, as it is balanced nicely across all frequencies. It’s always good advice to reference your mixes on something that the average listener will be using.

Final thoughts…

The consumer market for portable speakers is flooded with many at very competitive prices. However, we are certainly impressed at what can be purchased for around 40 dollars.

This speaker has a great balanced frequency range with lots of volume from the 14 watts of power. But remember that these are small speakers and will not compare in quality to a bigger system. Along as you bear that in mind, you can’t lose here, go and purchase a couple, and enjoy your holidays with your new travel companion.
