1 Sony Walkman 4GB Headphone WS413 – Best Waterproof Wireless Workout Headphones

Sony. Is there any brand name more synonymous with portable music equipment? They were the very first mass-produced personal music player. And with their newest iteration – the Sony Walkman 4GB Headphone WS413 – they are just as relevant today as in the late 1980s.

In the gym or the pool…

These fully waterproof neckband earbuds take portability to the next level with an integrated MP3 player. This makes them one of the best sets available not only for working out but also the best wireless headphones for swimming.

As expected from an all in one device, this set is a little bulkier than your run of the mill earbuds. But they are so well designed that they don’t feel like a hindrance considering what is hidden inside.

Inside the box, you are presented with four ear tip options. Two for everyday use and two specifically designed for swimming, which features an additional silicone membrane. The fit is snug and comfortable while swimming or running, with weight never becoming an issue.

Great stuff!

Loading your favorite albums and playlists onto the player is simple. And you can use the mode buttons on the unit to toggle between these. This does take a little getting used to but becomes intuitive in no time at all. There’s a handy verbal readout while toggling, which helps.

There is a decent amount of ANC provided by the ambient mic setup, which you can adjust to your preferences. The sound quality is very good. The bass provides a nice kick without overpowering. And the battery lasts a good ten hours on a 90-min charge.

Versatile and comfortable…

Overall, the Sony Walkman 4GB Headphone WS413 is a comfy and versatile set of workout headphones, or for anyone that wants to be able to listen to music without the need of a smartphone.

  • Built-in MP3 player.
  • Long-lasting comfort.
  • Perfect for swimmers.

Cons

  • No microphone.

2 Plantronics BackBeat FIT 3200 Bluetooth Earbuds – Best Budget Wireless Workout Headphones

The Plantronics BackBeat FIT 3200 Bluetooth earbuds have remedied the annoyance of earbud slip with the use of a rubberized over-ear hook design that works a treat. Plus, they have done so for a very attractive price.

These are true wireless tech. Meaning they are two separate units with no cable or cord attached to the earbuds. The hook design has some clear advantages for music listening – namely, better bass and noise isolation. Although there is no onboard ANC, the passive isolation is more than adequate.

Fully water and dustproof…

The IP57 rating means they can be safely submerged up to a meter and washed off without any issue. The charging case isn’t waterproof, though, so make sure you dry the earbuds before putting them back in the case.

Battery life averaged out at 10 hours 45 mins, and the case holds more than a full charge. 15 mins charging gives you two hours of playback, with a full charge taking just two hours!

How do they sound?

The sound quality is great while not being mind-blowing. Internally, each earpiece hides a 13mm driver delivering a frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz. The best way to describe the overall sound is balanced, with no hints of drowning bass while still being deep and punchy.

They handle multi-layered tracks like “Fat Freddy’s Drop – Shiverman” admirably, with room for all the instruments showcased to shine.

Superb value for the money…

The Plantronics BackBeat FIT 3200 is solid from start to finish and is a top set of wireless workout headphones for a very competitive price!

Plantronics BackBeat FIT 3200 Bluetooth Earbuds

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • IP57 water and dust resistant.
  • Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity.
  • Comfy and stable fit.
  • Long battery life.
  • Well priced.

Cons

  • May be slightly oversized for small ears.

3 Bose Sport Earbuds True Wireless Earphones – Best Sounding Wireless Workout Headphones

Bose have been producing some of the best top-end headphones for a long time now. The “QuietComfort” earbuds are the highest rated by many right now in terms of sound quality, but they are not well suited to exercise.

It seems that Bose have noticed this downside as well and decided to do something about it. That’s why we have the brand new “Bose Sport” earbuds hitting the market recently.

How do they compare?

Considering that they retail for a much lower price, the Sport earbuds are downright fantastic! They honestly do sound almost as good as the QuietComfort earbuds. With the added benefit of them being lighter and a little smaller, which makes them more comfortable. In fact, they are some of the most comfortable wireless earbuds in our review.

This set is not fully waterproof but does come with a splash-proof rating of IPX4. That means that your sweaty workouts and light rain won’t hurt them.

Comfort and control…

The small wingtip design employed here does a great job of keeping these earbuds securely in place while running. Furthermore, even when trying to shake them out, they stay put. Three different ear tip sizes are provided, with the medium pair working perfectly for us.

The touch controls feel natural and intuitive while not always delivering the desired result. Swiping will skip tracks, tapping will pause or restart, and holding down will power off the unit.

The big difference…

The most obvious difference between these and the QuietComfort earbuds is the total lack of ANC. This is not a huge downside, as they have strong passive cancellation and great sound across the board. Warm, precise, and well rounded is the best way we can describe the sound.

Battery life averaged 6.5 hours between charges, nowhere near the class leaders but still adequate for normal daily usage. The carrying case holds two full charges and has a LED panel to let you know how much juice is left in the case.

Bose Sport Earbuds True Wireless Earphones

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Warm, balanced sound.
  • Secure and comfortable fit.
  • Rock-solid wireless connection.
  • Smaller and lighter than QuietComfort Earbuds.

Cons

  • Mic quality could be improved.

4 Plantronics BackBeat FIT 500 Wireless Sport Headphones – Best On Ear Wireless Workout Headphones

Fans of big bass response and on-ear cans for workouts should take a long, hard look at the awesome Plantronics BackBeat FIT 500 headphones. Not to mention these are some of the best low cost wireless headphones we have looked at.

This lightweight, durable set of wireless headphones feature a P2i-rated sweat-repellent nano-coating, making them the perfect choice for runners and gym junkies alike.

What is P2i nano-coating?

Simply put, P2i is a liquid repellent nano-coating that is bonded to the surface of the headphones at the molecular level. It offers strong hydrophobic qualities that provide amazing protection.

As a result, any moisture, be it rain or sweat, running off the headphones keeping them perfectly dry. We were super impressed with how well this new tech works – even in a strong downpour, the water was totally repelled!

Pump the jams…

These headphones are a bass head’s dream. The 40 mm drivers and advanced acoustic technology provide a deep, rich low end that is beautifully balanced by a well-controlled, high-frequency response.

The controls are laid out in a practical fashion. The raised, rubberized buttons are set on the exterior of both ear cups with plenty of space between them. So, you won’t have to slow your running pace in the slightest to easily take control of playback or calls.

Quite comfy…

The generously cushioned memory foam headband and earpads provide long-lasting comfort. Likewise, they offer enough squeeze to stay put even through strenuous activity.

If you’re looking for a set of wireless on-ear headphones that are perfect to workout in, and won’t break the bank, then check out the Plantronics BackBeat FIT 500!

Plantronics BackBeat FIT 500 Wireless Sport Headphones

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Powerful bass with well-balanced highs.
  • Easy to use controls.
  • Long 18 hour battery life.
  • P2i sweat-resistant nano-coating.
  • Comfortable on-ear design.

Cons

  • Noise isolation is weak at best.

5 Sony WF-SP800N Truly Wireless Sports Headphones – Best Noise Cancelling Wireless Workout Headphones

Sony’s WF-1000XM3 is considered by many to be the best ANC wireless earbuds on the market right now. But with one exception; no trace of any IP rating or water resistance.

However, it seems like Sony listened to this criticism…

And with the release of the Sony WF-SP800N true wireless sport earbuds, we finally have a water resistant version!

Although there are some small differences between the two sets, Sony has managed (unsurprisingly) to produce one of, if not the best, set of workout headphones available today!

The best ANC around…

The sound quality is far above many of the other contenders, aided by class-leading active noise cancellation. The sound is robust, lively, and warm in equal parts. As a result, they have the widest soundstage we have come across for workout earbuds.

Controls are split between the two units, with a touch-sensitive pad on each. Different gestures will control everything from ANC activation to answering calls to playback functions. Likewise, Google Assistant or Siri can be used for any control task.

Listen longer…

The battery life is an impressive 9.5 hours with ANC activated, which is the best in class for true wireless earbuds. With ANC deactivated, we were able to squeeze 15 hours out of one single charge, and the carrying case holds another full charge.

The almost “retro” design reminds us of a mini version of those Bluetooth headsets every taxi driver used to wear – which we actually like a lot. They do a great job of staying put during strenuous exercise and are comfy even through extended periods.

Sony WF-SP800N Truly Wireless Sports Headphones

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Class-leading ANC.
  • Amazing sound.
  • Long-lasting comfort.
  • IP55 water-resistant.
  • Excellent battery life.
  • Great call quality.

Cons

  • They stick out from your ears more than other sets.

6 Jaybird Vista True Wireless Bluetooth Sport Waterproof Earbuds – Best Lightweight Wireless Workout Headphones

Next, in our Best Wireless Workout Headphones review, you may not have heard of Jaybird (or their fantastic headphones) before. But, take it from us, the Vista True Wireless Sport Headphones are phenomenal. And easily some of the best Bluetooth headphones out there.

Jaybird have really outdone themselves here. And have sent a message to companies like Bose and Sony that there’s a new player at the table!

What makes the Jaybird Vista so good?

There’s a whole range of reasons that we love this set. First up, let’s talk about pricing. You get a true top of the line set for at least 30% less than other companies sell for. Then there’s the design – modern, sleek, and compact with a bunch of features directly aimed at workouts.

The IPX7 water resistance rating means they can deal both with heavy rain or even a short dip in up to a meter of water. And in terms of sound quality, these can definitely hang with the big boys. The soundstage is on point and rivals Sony for best in class!

Easy sound customization…

The Jaybird app is surprisingly jammed packed with user control options, and you can easily create your own sound profiles to match different music genres. There’s also a full buffet of pre-loaded options for you to play around with.

Longevity and connectivity…

In terms of battery life, we were able to push out almost seven hours. Not the best we’ve seen but with the slimline case holding another full charge, we never felt low on juice.

Jaybird have upped their connectivity with this set. Now featuring Bluetooth 5.0 with multi-codec support, connecting was lightning fast, and signal strength was strong for distances of up to 30 feet. A great set of wireless workout headphones indeed.

Jaybird Vista True Wireless Bluetooth Sport Waterproof Earbuds

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Pros

  • Slimline, lightweight case.
  • Great Bluetooth connection.
  • Huge sound.
  • Well priced.
  • IPX7 water resistance.
  • Strong ANC.

Cons

  • No ambient sound mode.

7 Apple AirPods Pro – Best Wireless Headphones for iPhone

It took longer than it should have, but finally, Apple has released a pro version of the AirPods featuring water resistance. And, even though we weren’t huge fans of the original AirPods, we can’t say the same for the Pro version. And they are probably the best apple headphones on the market.

A fit all your own…

The secret to using the AirPod Pro is all about finding the right fit. Apple has designed an automatic setup process that will help decide which set of tips suit your ears best, and once that snug fit is achieved, this set truly starts to shine.

We know we have talked up the ANC on a few sets thus far, but we were surprised with how far Apple has come in the last few years. The transparency mode works amazing well.

The design of the Airpod is not only iconic but also super ergonomic. They are smaller and lighter than many other sets and fit so well. To be honest, we forgot we were wearing headphones at all sometimes.

So, what’s the catch?

The one downside to this is battery life. They still pass the five-hour test, but not by much. Luckily the carry case holds enough for two full charges.

The control layout has been simplified, with no sign of controls at all. The base of each stem hides the buttons, with a range of control options available and easy to use – even during heavy workouts.

Improved sound quality…

AirPods have long been ridiculed for their terrible sound, but once again, Apple has surprised us here. Overall the sound is great, with no balancing issues. EQ settings are at your fingertips with built-in settings on your iPhone.

So, if you’re an iPhone user and have been looking for a new set of workout earbuds, check out the AirPods and see if they surprise you.

Apple AirPods Pro

Our rating:4.8 out of 5 stars (4.8 / 5)

Pros

  • Great ANC capabilities.
  • Sweat and water-resistant.
  • Good fit with three ear tip options.
  • Surprisingly good sound.

Cons

  • Charging via lightning cable.

8 Master & Dynamic MW07 GO True Wireless Earphones – Best Premium Wireless Workout Headphones

The Master & Dynamic MW07 GO True Wireless Earphones are certainly not the cheapest set in our review of the Best Wireless Workout Headphones. But what you get are a set of top-notch sounding and aesthetically stunning earbuds. Certainly, one of the best premium earbuds currently on the market.

Trend changing design…

The design takes a step away from what we are used to seeing. The acetate finish on the earbuds reminds us more of premium eyeglass frames than earbuds. This striking feature comes in a range of color options, with the carrying case being mirror-polished stainless steel.

Convenient controls…

M & D have simplified the control structure, with a dedicated volume rocker on one side and a control button on the other. We loved the dedicated volume rocker – especially when working out. Hopefully, other companies head down that road in the future.

Furthermore, there is a hidden IR sensor hidden in each unit that detects when they are removed, and auto pauses playback. A common feature these days, but always a welcome one.

Superior sound…

Master and Dynamic always excel at sound quality, and the MW07 GO is no exception to the rule. The wideness of the soundstage is awesome for such small drivers, and the balance these drivers produce is breathtaking.

The one glaring downside is battery life. At best, we averaged four hours. The case does hold two full charges, but that overall number is much less than some cheaper alternatives.

Master & Dynamic MW07 GO True Wireless Earphones

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Stunning aesthetics.
  • Detailed sound.
  • Long-range Bluetooth.
  • Super comfortable.
  • Dedicated volume rocker.

Cons

  • Expensive.
  • Disappointing battery life.

9 Bose Frames Tempo Sports Audio Sunglasses – Best Wireless Headphones for Biking

And now for something completely different. Bose Frames Tempo is a pair of second-generation audio-enabled headphones from sound behemoth Bose.

When Gen 1 hit the market a few years ago, people weren’t sure what to make of them. But they have since spawned a class of their own, and this new generation has improved the class exponentially.

Smart glasses?

The term “smart glasses” might bring up embarrassing memories for Google Glass wearers, but these are a very different beast. There’s no camera or screen involved. Instead, what we are presented with is a set of sunglasses that has a pair of built-in speakers aimed directly at your ears.

So do these speakers sound any good?

Amazingly, and probably unsurprisingly, Bose has done a great job with the sound. In practice, they sound a lot like a quality set of open-back earbuds. Sound leak is minimal, with the depth warmness of the audio shining through.

That’s not all…

The next surprise is how good the microphone quality is for calls. This set topped out tests in call quality. Battery life is an admirable eight hours, with a quick charge time of just a single hour to get the batteries back to full.

The IPX4 rating results in no issues, whether in rain, hail, or shine. And the polarized lenses do a great job of protecting the eyes from harmful UV glare.

Superb for bike rides…

Without a doubt, these fall into a niche category. But what they do, they do very well. A safe bet for the best cycling headphones out there today.

Bose Frames Tempo Sports Audio Sunglasses

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Great sound without blocking your ears.
  • Amazing levels of comfort.
  • Great battery life.
  • Polarized lenses.
  • Excellent call quality.

Cons

  • A niche product that will not replace your everyday set.
  • No charging case.

Best Wireless Workout Headphones Buyers Guide

Price

The first thing to consider when trying to find the best quality wireless workout headphones is your budget. As with most things in life, if you are willing to splash a little extra, then you will usually end up with a higher quality product. However, this isn’t always necessary. There are some great sets of headphones available in the lower and mid-price ranges these days.

Furthermore, the price of some of the high-end models is inflated through useless features. That means if you’re looking for a simple set with great sound quality, you may be able to save a few dollars.

Comfort and Fit

The most frustrating thing when working out in headphones is constantly having to re-adjust them, so they stay snug and in place. Even worse is when they are just straight out uncomfortable.

best wireless workout headphone

This is the most personal variable, as some sets that fit one person perfectly may not be the right ones for you. Most of us have a pretty good idea of the type of headphones we prefer and which suits us best.

Headphone Style

There are a couple of different form factors for you to choose from when it comes to wireless workout headphones. All types (in-ear earbuds, neckband earbuds, and over-ear cans) have their own set of pros and cons.

But, for the most part, we recommend a set of earbuds over cans. They are just more comfortable for most people while working up a sweat, with the ears themselves staying much cooler.

Water and Sweat Resistance

It’s fair to say that we all sweat, especially when working hard at the gym. That is why choosing a pair of workout headphones with a good IP (Ingress Protection) rating is so important.

Anything with a rating of IPX4 is sweat-proof only. However, those with an IPX7 and IPX8 are the only truly waterproof models.

Sound Quality

Of course, when choosing any set of headphones, sound quality should be of the highest importance. In the gym, you want a set that will deliver deep bass, punchy mids, and clear highs to keep that motivation high.

wireless workout headphone

But maybe you want to use your new set of workout headphones as your everyday set? If so, make sure that the mic assembly is up to the job of handling calls with precision. Most of the sets reviewed here have great mics and can be used comfortably all day long.

Battery Life

One of the few downsides to choosing a wireless headset is the reliance placed on batteries. These batteries have been getting better and better with each passing year, though.

Any set worth its weight will provide at least five hours of uninterrupted usage, and should have a carrying case that recharges them quickly.

Noise Cancellation

If you are a fan of totally blocking out any outside distractions, then you should grab a set with ANC (active noise cancellation). Most sets, especially in-ear buds, offer at least a small amount of passive noise cancellation. But, if you are willing to pay a bit more, then grab a set with ANC.

What Are The Best Wireless Workout Headphones?

Hopefully, this roundup has left you feeling much more confident in choosing your new set of wireless sport headphones. But if you’re still a little confused, we recommend going for the…

Jaybird Vista True Wireless Bluetooth Sport Waterproof Earbuds

Great headphones with amazing sound and a long-lasting battery for a very reasonable price.

So, until next time, happy listening.
